BEIJING: According to the sources, two men have died in a tanker anchored at the Port of Shenzhen after being starved of oxygen.

Two crewmen reportedly went to check on another crew member but did not return themselves, prompting a callout to the Shenzhen Maritime Rescue Centre. The ship in which the two crewmen had died was the Chinese-flagged Jin Wang You 9 which was said to be carrying aviation oil to Shenzhen from Huizhou.

This follows a recent incident at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering’s shipyard, where two people were killed as a result of a ship fire. This incident also highlights the increased risk of accidents in China after the explosion which took place at Tianjin Port recently, killing more than 158 people.

11 were suspected of violating health and safety procedures by continuing with the construction of a hazardous materials warehouse, despite knowledge that the construction site was considered unsafe, suggesting that more stringent procedures must now be put in place to counter the risk of accidents.
