HONG KONG: Scott Kelly, astronaut from the United States, captured some amazing pictures of a stellar lineup, where earth, moon and the Venus can be seen. The astronaut also shared the pictures on his Twitter account.
Kelly not only captured the stellar lineup, but also posted it on micro-blogging website, Twitter. The astronaut posted two pictures of the alignment, about 12 hours apart. The first photo was posted by the 51-year-old astronaut at 4:42 pm on September 10. He wrote, “Day 166. #Venus photobombed the #Moon tonight. Good night from @space_station! #YearInSpace”.
The second picture was tweeted on Thursday morning in which, he wrote about the moon and Venus. Earlier, the second planet from the Sun was visible because of its high albedo, amount of light a planet reflects into space from a layer of permanent clouds surrounding it.
These surrounding clouds reflect approximately 75% of the sunlight that they receive back toward earth. The reflected sunlight is also responsible for the bright looking moon. After Venus, the moon is the only bright object in the night sky.
Kelly boarded the space station this March. He and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko are part of an experiment which will test how the human body deals with prolonged space travel. Kornienko and Kelly are the first astronauts who will spend a full year on the space station, about double the length of time that typical missions last.
