Bangladesh textile exports earning stands at $26,509m in 2014-15

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s textile sector’s export earnings show this industrial segment has grown more than double in the last six years.

The sector earned only 13,129.09 million US dollars in terms of export in 2009-10 financial year while its earning stood at 26,509.77 million dollars in 2014-15 financial year, Textile and Jute Minister  Md Emaz Uddin Pramanik disclosed the statistics in parliament on Wednesday.

The minister was responding to question in parliament floor.

According to his statistics, the export earnings from the textile sector were steadily rising. Bangladesh exports textile products worth about 19,002.78 million US dollars in 2010-11 fiscal followed by 21,496.57 million US dollars in 2011-12 financial year.

The country earned 22,556.73 million US dollars in 2012-13 while the earning in 2013-14 was 25,508.77 million dollars in the following fiscal.

Emaz Uddin said the government has set a target to earn foreign currency worth about 28,447.57 million in the current fiscal of 2015-16 year.

Responding to another question, the Minister said Bangladesh exported a total of 84.37 lakh bales (1 bale = 181 kg) of jute in the last five fiscal from 2010-11 to 2014-15. But the amount of exported jute was 111.08 lakh bales in the five fiscals from 2005-06 to 2009-10, he noted.

Bangladesh exports jute mainly to Pakistan, China, India, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Vietnam, Korea, Russia, Djibouti, Nepal, Cuba, Germany, UK, USA, EI Salvador, the Philippines, Tunisia, Netherlands, Belgium, Ethiopia, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Iran, South Africa, Turkey and Italy, the minister said.
