MEXICO CITY: Arizona Commerce Authority’s Mexican counterpart, ProMexico, is opening an office in Phoenix.
The Phoenix office, temporarily housed in the Mexican Consulate on McDowell Road and Third Street, will be ProMexico’s 12th U.S. office. The organization has 31 other offices around the globe and three in Canada, and more than 30 within Mexico.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton calls ProMexico’s Phoenix office an “important economic and symbolic move.”
“This is the Mexican federal government investing its own money in Arizona’s economy,” the mayor said. “It shows that our relationship with Mexico has reached a turning point. This is a move in the right direction for Phoenix, Arizona and Mexican relations.”
Eduardo Gonzalez Diaz DeLeon has been nominated as first secretary for the office and is awaiting for completion of the credentialing process through the federal and state governments.
A formal opening with Mexican, U.S. and Arizona officials is being planned for late October-early November.
Stanton said he is impressed with Gonzalez’s experience and believes the Phoenix office will be extremely productive.
“ProMexico will help Phoenix companies wanting to do business in Mexico,” said the mayor. “The office will work with our trade office in Mexico City to get businesses connected to the resources they need.”
Gonzalez comes to the Phoenix office from Baja, California, where he was the equivalent of ACA president and CEO for the ProMexico office. He also worked as a director for Banco Mexico and its export-import bank both in Mexico and the Netherlands. His Ex-Im banking experience will be important for U.S. companies wanting Mexican trade now that Congress has allowed the U.S. Ex-Im Bank to expire.
Gonzalez said his first job in his new role is to promote Mexico’s trade interests in Phoenix.
Gonzalez represents the Mexican side of the trade equation, functioning for Mexican companies in a manner similar to what the U.S. Commercial Service does for American companies in foreign countries.
“I’ll promote the sales of Mexican goods to U.S. companies and also help U.S. companies make investment in Mexican companies,” Gonzalez said.
