LONDON: All Baltic ports together handled 89.667 million tons of cargo in the first seven months of 2015, which was by 5.363 million tons or 5.6 percent less than a year ago, the Latvian national statistics office reported.
Of all cargos reloaded at the Baltic ports in the first seven months of this year, 47.4 percent were handled at Latvian ports, 29.1 percent at Lithuanian ports and 23.5 percent at Estonian ports. Only Lithuanian ports showed an increase of cargo turnover year-on-year in January-July 2015.
Cargo handling at Latvian ports dropped 5.2 percent or 2.319 million tons in the first seven months of this year to 42.458 million tons.
Cargo handling at Lithuanian ports grew 6.7 percent or 1.641 million tons year-on-year to 26.119 million tons, while Estonian ports reloaded 21.09 million tons, down 18.2 percent or 4.685 million tons from the first seven months in 2014.
Latvia’s Riga port led other Baltic ports by cargo turnover in the first seven months of 2015, having reloaded 23.709 million tons, up one percent year-on-year.
Klaipeda in Lithuania came second with 22.217 million tons handled in January-July at an 8 percent growth from the same period in 2014. The northwestern Latvian port of Ventspils was third with 14.826 million tons reloaded in January-July 2015, down 14.7 percent year-on-year.
Estonia’s largest port, Tallinn, was fourth in the Baltics with 13.705 million tons of cargo reloaded in January-July 2015, down 21.1 percent from the first seven months of 2014.
In 2014, all Baltic ports together received and shipped 161.44 million tons of cargo, of which 45.9 percent were handled in Latvia, 27.1 percent in Lithuania and 27 percent at Estonia.
