McALLEN: An Austin man was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for attempting to smuggle heroin into the United States. George Granillo-Romero, 57, was sentenced to 87 months in prison and two years supervised probation upon release by U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby, according to court records.
Granillo-Romero was arrested Aug. 9, 2011, at a port of entry near Roma when he was sent for a secondary inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, according to the criminal complaint.
During their initial conversation with the man, officers became suspicious when Granillo-Romero detailed his itinerary from his trip to Mexico but could not provide a name for the town he visited and the name of the hotel he had stayed at while in Mexico, according to the complaint.
Officers conducted a search on Granillo-Romero’s SUV and found more than 22 pounds of heroin and more than 10 pounds of cocaine in the front fender of the SUV with the help of a K-9 officer, according to the complaint.
