CANADA: Peru’s director general responsible for concessions at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Raúl García, wants to see eight major ports operational in Peru over the next 10 years.
He argues that, not only will this drive down logistics costs and therefore boost overseas trade, but also lessen the reliance on the country’s three main ports: Callao, Paita and Matarani, where the majority of such traffic is currently handled. Ports to be developed are Salaverry, Chimbotr, Huacho, Pisco and Ilo.
The government has already initiated studies into construction of Miguel Grau port. This would serve as an alternative outlet for Bolivian cargo on the Pacific, much of which is currently handled by ports in the north of Chile.
A Chinese companies is undertaking a viability study for the port, which would provide connections to Asian countries, such as India, China and Japan. The study, which is costing $15m will be completed by 2016.
