Port of Los Angeles containers The container turnover at Port of Los Angeles in August 2015 rose with 3.8% yoy to 786,670 TEU, due to increasing imports and handling of empty containers. The import of laden containers at Port of Los Angeles increased by 6.3% yoy to 407,800 TEU, while exports decreased with 14.5% yoy to 143,940 TEU. In general the handling of empty containers increased significantly with 14.1% yoy to 234,930 TEU, while the handling of laden containers remained relatively unchanged on year-on-year basis to 551,800 TEU. Despite of the August increase, the accumulated container turnover at Port of Los Angeles during period January-August 2015 is still on negative trend with decrease of 2.5% yoy to 5.39 million TEU.
The Port of Los Angeles is largest one of the largest seaports on the Pacific coast of USA and one of the major container hubs in the country. At the end of 2014 container traffic amounted to 8.34 million TEU. The port has 27 cargo terminals, including facilities for handling of dry bulk, containerized cargo and vehicles.
The peak shipping season has started, which is expected to compensate the decreases from the beginning of the year. The increased imports in the US Pacific Ports are mostly based due to bringing merchandise to the stores in time for the holiday season. The good August performance in container turnover at Port of Los Angeles is the strongest for this month since 2006.
“The numbers are strong indicators that our terminal operators, longshore-labor and supply-chain partners are adjusting to the new industry dynamics of carrier alliances, deploying larger ships and delivering higher container volumes per call”, said Executive Director of Port of Los Angeles, Gene Seroka.
