TEHRAN: Some 121,000 people were detained for drug smuggling in Iran for the first six months of the Iranian calendar year (which started March 20), the news website of the Iranian television IRIB News reported with reference to Ali Moayedi, the brigadier general, the head of the anti-drug division of Iran’s police.

He said that some 1,300 groups involved in drug trafficking were neutralized during this period.

“Some 1,000 skirmishes were observed between the smugglers and the police during those six months,” he said. “As a result, some 20 armed smugglers were killed.”

During this period, the Iranian police confiscated 300 metric tons of drugs, which is 20 percent more than in the same period of 2014.

He also said that some 100 clandestine workshops for the production of drugs were revealed in Iran during that period.

“The Iranian police are cooperating with more than 50 countries in the fight against drug trafficking,” he said.
