UK to assist Afghanistan in economic, trade activities, tax reforms

KABUL: British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond has said his country backs the Afghanistan unity government’s reform programme.

Hammond was talking to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah during a meeting on the sidelines of the 70the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, a statement from the CEO office said on Tuesday.

At the meeting, the CEO briefed the UK foreign minister about Afghanistan’s security situation and internal and external threats and future challenges his country faced.

Hammond praised Afghan forces for their heroism and said due to their commitment and strong resolve, the insurgents had been unable to reach their nefarious designs.

Abdullah said Afghanistan expected continued support from its allies in defeating extremist elements.

The UK foreign minister appreciated the Afghan government’s efforts at bringing administrative and electoral reforms and assured of his county’s full support.

He said the reform process in government administration would help resolve several problems and the UK would support such efforts.

The revival of the ancient Silk road, Afghanistan and Pakistan relations, regional trade and economic issue also came under discussion at the meeting.
