BEIJING: China-based makers exported LED lighting products worth US$355 million in total to the India market during January-August 2015, hiking 76.61% on year, and the export value included US$88 million for ceiling lamps, US$73 million for panel lights and US$30 million for projection lamps, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

The India government plans to completely replace home-use lighting and street lamps in 100 cities with LED light bulbs and street lamps respectively by March 2019, leading to an estimated total demand for 770 million LED bulbs and 35 million LED street lamps, the sources indicated.

The India government plans to procure LED bulbs in large volumes through open-bid competition for resale to home users at low prices, the sources said. For the most recent open bid, some suppliers quoted INR74 (US$1.12) for an LED light bulb, much lower than the India government’s target price of INR99, the sources indicated. The India government expects procurement prices to drop to as low as INR44 for a LED light bulb in 2016, the sources noted.

The India government has introduced star ratings for luminous efficiency of LED lighting products, with 1-star for luminous efficiency below 79lm/W, 2-star for 79-90lm/W, 3-star for 91-105lm/W, 4-star for 106-120lm/W and 5-star for over 120lm/W, the sources indicated. Currently in the India market, LED lighting products are mostly 2-star and 3-star.
