Canada’s demand promising for Vietnamese tuna exports

OTTAWA: Canada remains a strong market for Vietnamese tuna, with increases in tuna exports expecteed in the last months of 2015, reports the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (Vasep).
Canada’s demand accounts for 80% of Vietnam’s total tuna exports, most of which are tuna loins (61%).
Although Vietnamese tuna sales into Canada in the first eight months of the year decreased 27.6% year-on-year, this month’s numbers show an increase of 61% y-o-y, and imports are expected to continue increasing in the final few months.
Canada imports tuna from 53 suppliers around the world, of which Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam are leading ones.
In June of this year Canada imported almost 19,600 metric tons of tuna, worth $91.6 million, up 15% in volume and 7% in value.
