BEIJING: China’s outstanding foreign debt settled at around 1.68 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of June, slightly up by 6.9 billion U.S. dollars from the end of March, data from the country’s forex regulator showed.

Most of the debt owed to foreign creditors, or around 70 percent of the total foreign debt, resulted from short-term borrowing, as outstanding external debt with a term of one year or less amounted to about 1.17 trillion U.S. dollars, while long- and medium-term outstanding external debt came in at 510 billion U.S. dollars, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in a statement on its website.

The amount does not include the outstanding external debt of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions or that of Taiwan, SAFE said.
