BRENT: NASA scientist confirmed that liquid water flowing on the surface of present day Mars and is mostly salty and not pure.
New findings from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have provided the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on the red planet.
The images from MRO showed dark slops on a Martian crater, known as recurring slope lineae (RSL) that would flow through the planet’s seasons.
Those hydrated minerals called perchlorates are “able to keep water from freezing even at temperatures as cold as -94 degrees Fahrenheit”, as reported on CNBC.
NASA made a key discovery about Mars which may have ramifications in the search for life on the planet.
Dark streaks running down slopes on the Martian surface were observed about four years ago. Spotted by the agency’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft, the streaks go away during cooler seasons. The findings strongly support the hypothesis that recurring slope lineae form as a result of contemporary water activity on Mars. Hydrated salts were previously found in the Martian soil by NASA’s Phoenix lander and Curiosity rover.
After the spotting of the creepy, mysterious woman, the possibility of finding life on the red planet has been fuelled yet again when NASA announced that they’ve found flowing water on Mars.
As a professor of physics and astronomy at Salisbury University, Dr. Any Pica says the announcement of liquid water being found on Mars was not only personally exciting, but could generate new interest in young people to explore careers in science. The scientists conclusion came after confirming the dark streaks on the surface are associated with water through a process called “deliquescence”.
“Looking forward, it is imperative for us to understand the source of these water features, as well as the amount”, said Mary Beth Wilhelm of NASA’s Ames Research Center.
