ARIZONA: Seventeen smugglers, 15 impostors and nearly 500 pounds of marijuana were seized near Arizona’s border with Sonora over the weekend by border agents, the federal government said.
Fifteen people posing as legal residents were arrested at the Wellton Station checkpoint on Interstate 8 east of Yuma in separate incidents Friday and Saturday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. According to an agency news release, all of the people were Mexican nationals with valid, but falsely acquired, immigration documents. The people falsely claimed U.S. citizenship and had U.S. passports and lawfully admitted permanent resident cards belonging to others, the government says. The agency said it did not know whether the documents had been reported stolen.
CBP agents also arrested 17 Mexican nationals Friday and Saturday on accusations of smuggling marijuana into the United States. CBP said the agents found the group near Sentinel, south of Interstate 8, and seized 490 pounds of marijuana worth approximately $245,450.
