PANAJI: The 11th Asia-Europe meeting of the Directors of General-Commissioners of Customs will be held in Goa on October 8 and 9 to improve the functioning of the customs, revealed the Commissioner of Customs (A), Pawan Kumar Sinha.
The meet will be chaired by Najib Shah chairman, CBEC.
Addressing the media, Sinha stated that Central Board of Excise and Customs will be hosting the Asia-Europe meet at Cidade de Goa, wherein over 100 delegates will grace the occasion.
He said that the meeting will focus on the five main priorities of ASEM trade – facilitation and supply chain security, combating infringement on IPR, protection of society and environment, business, and communication and visibility.
The director general, Commissioners of Customs will deliberate on a new action plan for 2016-17 which will be reflecting on the priorities of customs administrations as they face the twin challenges of facilitating trade and ensuring legal compliance as global trade volumes rise, he pointed.
He informed that 21 European, 30 from Asia, 53 from member states of ASEM, 2 international organisations namely the European Commission and the ASEAN secretariat are expected to attend while Kunio Mikuria, Secretary General of the 180 member strong World Customs Organisation (WCO) will also be present at the event as an observer.
He said India is hosting the Head of Customs administrations meeting for the first time since joining the ASEM forum in 2008. Heads of Customs administrations and delegates from all these countries will be attending the meeting for two days.
ASEM was established in 1996, and aims at strengthening the Asia-Europe relations and in this direction provides opportunities for dialogues and cooperation between countries of Asia and Europe in wide areas covering politics, economy, culture and others.
Cooperation in Customs matters between Asia and Europe is an important element of the ASEM framework and the Director General-Commissioners of Customs of ASEM meet biennially to discuss current developments and priorities of customs, he added.
