NEW DELHI: The Podanur police arrested four persons and seized two-and-a-half kg ganja on Sunday.
According to Inspector N. Premanandhan, during a vehicle check at the SIDCO Industrial Estate gate, the police stopped a scooter rider and asked him to furnish registration certificate, licence and insurance papers.
When he opened the seat to take the papers, the police smelt ganja and took the rider and pillion rider for questioning.
The Inspector said that the rider, Arun Menon (24), told the policemen that he had bought the ganja from Madivala, Bengaluru, on Saturday and was returning to the city to be sold locally in Premium Nagar, near Othakalmandapam. Pillion rider Binesh (21) was his friend.
Another team of the Podanur police, which was conducting a similar exercise at the Pillaiarpuram Junction, stopped another scooter rider asking for documents. The police team too found ganja under the seat and took Fazil (20) and Adarsh K.S. (23) for questioning.
Fazil had told the police team that he had bought the contraband in Madivala, Bengaluru, and was returning to the city to be sold to college students and daily wagers.
During interrogation at the Podanur police station, the police learnt that the four were from Peringottukara in Thrissur district, Kerala, and were into ganja smuggling for quite sometime. Arun Menon had a case pending against him at a local police station for a similar offence.
The police had invoked provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in two cases to arrest the four and seize the contraband and vehicles used for transportation.
