COLOMBO: South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT), the first private sector facility in Sri Lanka’s Port of Colombo, has been ranked number one for terminal productivity in South Asia by the Journal of Commerce in the USA.
SAGT was recognized by the Journal of Commerce in its annual Terminal Productivity Ranking 2014 which also ranked it number 4 in the world, a statement said.
SAGT was the first private container terminal operator in the Port of Colombo commencing in 1999.
It has four shareholders – John Keells Holdings, APM Terminals, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Peony Investments, an Evergreen Group subsidiary.
“The 14.2m draft, 3 berth terminal transformed operational efficiency in the Port of Colombo with an average of 34 moves per hour per crane,” it said.
“With a diversified book of customers the terminal continues to show resilience in the face of increased competition in the port following the commissioning of the South Harbour deep draft facilities.”
SAGT said that with a potential handling capacity of two million containers, the terminal has almost a 30 percent market share in the port of Colombo’s three container terminal operation.
“These performance outcomes are the result of careful strategic planning involving the various stakeholders,” Ted Muttiah, SAGT’s Chief Commercial Officer said.
