GEORGETOWN: Authorities were preparing to charge a Canadian man with cocaine trafficking after he was allegedly caught trying to smuggle a large quantity of the narcotic out of the country, authorities said.
Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), James Singh said the 53-year old man had in his possession 25 pounds of cocaine.
The top anti-drug agent said the cocaine was concealed in packets of milk and frozen seafood.
The passenger was due to travel to Toronto aboard a Fly Jamaica flight.
CANU has been making frequent arrests at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
In the past, persons have attempted to smuggle cocaine from Guyana in cooked food, rum, artificial awara, seafood, condiments, toothpaste, cosmetics, charcoal and fake noodles made of drinking straws and other creative means.
Law enforcement agencies in other countries have discovered cocaine from Guyana in canned coconut milk, furniture, scrapped metal, star-apples and man-made wiri-wiri pepper.
