WELLINGTON: A 21-year-old man has been arrested by Customs and charged with the importation and possession for supply of a class B controlled drug, after 14.6 kilos of ephedrine, used to manufacture ‘P’, was stopped at the border.
An investigation was launched after Customs officers at the Air Cargo Inspections Facility in Auckland discovered a white crystalline substance hidden inside a consignment from Malaysia. The substance was tested and showed a positive result for ephedrine.
14.6 kilos of ephedrine could yield approximately seven kilos of methamphetamine which would be worth up to $7 million on the street.
Customs Investigations Manager Maurice O’Brien says this is an excellent result for both Customs and Police, which has stopped a large amount of drugs getting into our communities.
“Keeping these drugs off the streets is not only a win for us but a win for the people of Canterbury,” says Mr O’Brien. “The cost of the social harm of this amount of methamphetamine to the community could be as much as $3 million.”
Customs and Police officers swooped on a Yaldhurst address in Canterbury yesterday morning (Thursday, 15 October) where the drugs were found.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Stewart said Canterbury Police are committed to interrupting the supply of drugs in the District.
“Police will continue to work in partnership with Customs and other agencies to prevent the social harm caused by drugs such as this and the associated crime that is often committed by people to fund their addiction.”
The accused man is currently in custody and will appear in the Christchurch District Court this morning, Friday 16 October 2015.
