HONG KONG: Hong Kong Customs detected a suspected smuggling case involving a container truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point here the other day and seized about 28,000 memory cards and 100 USB flash drives worth about $1,376,000 in total.
Customs officers intercepted an outgoing container truck for inspection on the afternoon and found the memory cards and USB flash drives concealed inside a cushion in the vehicle. A 50-year-old male driver was arrested and charged with attempting to export unmanifested cargo. He will appear at Fanling Magistrates’ Courts on October 28.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
