MOSCOW: Negotiators for the United States concluded the text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement with representatives of Japan, Australia, Mexico and other Pacific Rim nations. The ratification of the hotly-contested trade deal by the governments of the 12 Pacific Rim countries is still pending.
“TPP by itself I do not think it will bring any negative impact on [Russia-Mexico Trade Relations]. The main impact of TPP is broader access to other markets. Other consequences, negative consequences I do not foresee,” Beltran stressed.
The controversial deal is a comprehensive framework to deregulate the movement of goods and services among Pacific Rim countries, covering about 40 percent of the global economy.
Opponents of the accord note that it has been negotiated in unusual secrecy, and note that, based on leaked texts, the agreement will give large corporations economic preference over small businesses and allow for trade outside of sovereign government oversight.
Mexico is interested in doing business with Moscow despite long-term high-volume trade relations with the United States, Beltran said.
“We are very interested in furthering our trade relations with Russia… We hope that in the future in the area of sea food and milk products the Russian market will be open to Mexican products,” the ambassador said.
He added that despite the fact that “we are neighbors and 80 percent of our trade takes place with the United States…we are trying to develop all the markets.”
