SOFIA: Bulgarian customs seized large amount of smuggled gold jewellery at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint.
The gold jewellery was found in the hallow space of a passenger’s bus. Authorities seized a total of 5.6 kilos of golden items, worth more than BGN 300,000.
The bus was with Turkish registration and was travelling to Kosovo. The passengers said they had nothing to declare before the customs but the officers still selected the vehicle for a thorough x-ray check.
The customs officers found 420 pairs of earrings, 407 chainlets, 312 rings, 172 bracelets, 126 medallions and 25 necklaces.
The bus and the gold jewellery were confiscated. The driver, a Turkish passenger, was arrested. A pre-court proceeding was initiated.
