Appellants start filing cases in Urdu before Collector Appeals

LAHORE: Appellants begun to file appeals in Urdu language before Collectorate of Customs Lahore and till now more than five appeals have been filed in national language.

The appeals were filed after a circular issued by Collector Appeals Lahore Dr Asif Mehmood Jah instructing the appellants that the lawyers and the trader parties by themselves can file appeals in Urdu.

The collector of customs told Customs Today that at least five appeals have been filed in Urdu by the parties’ lawyers and by the parties themselves.  He said that the filing of Urdu application is comparatively easy for the parties and also cost effective.

He added that small traders often had to pay huge amount as fees to the lawyers for filing appeals which not only pushed up the cost of the items disputed but become an additional financial burden.

The collector of customs Asif Mehmood Jah become the first officer in Federal Board of Revenue who has written orders on appeals in Urdu following the Supreme Court gave its verdict that the Urdu be implemented as official language.
