MEXICO CITY: The year-on-year imports of iron ore by Mexico surged significantly higher by over 100% during the month of July this year. The iron ore imports by the country totaled 234,982 tons during the month. Mexico’s iron ore imports doubled in July
SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The iron ore imports by Mexico during the month of July this year increased significantly over the imports recorded during the same month a year ago. This is as per the latest trade statistics released by the country’s Secretariat of Economy. The imports during the month rose sharply by 100.9% year-on-year.
The country’s iron ore imports during the month totaled 234,982 tonnes. The iron ore imports had totaled 116,989 tonnes during July last year. The import of agglomerated iron ore totaled 141,818 tonnes, rising considerably by 165.2% when compared with the imports of 53,467 tonnes during the same month a year ago. Meantime, the imports of non-agglomerated iron ore during the month totaled 93,164 tonnes. The imports surged higher by 46.7% when compared with the imports of 63,522 tonnes during July 2014.
The primary exporter of iron ore to Mexico during July ’15 was Brazil. The non-agglomerated and agglomerated iron ore exports by Brazil to Mexico totaled 60,381 tonnes and 109,165 tonnes respectively. Mexico imported 32,692 tonnes of non-agglomerated ore from Venezuela during the month. The US exported 80 tonnes and 32,653 tonnes of non-agglomerated and agglomerated iron ore respectively to Mexico during July ’15.
The cumulative iron ore imports by Mexico during the initial seven-month period in 2015 totaled 950,229 tonnes, considerably higher by 6.3% when compared with the cumulative imports of 893,591 tonnes during Jan-Jul ’14. The imports of non-agglomerated iron ore by the country has dropped by 9.1% from 515,113 tonnes during Jan-Jul ‘15 to 468,370 tonnes during the corresponding seven-month period in 2014. On the other hand, imports of agglomerated iron ore went higher by 27.3% over the year during January to July from 378,478 tonnes to 481,859 tonnes.
The US remained the key exporter of iron ore to Mexico during Jan-Jul ’15. The US exports totaled 747,685 tonnes during this period. The other key import sources were Brazil (169,546 tonnes) and Venezuela (32,692 tonnes).
