MUMBAI: The air intelligence unit (AIU) of Customs seized around 1 kg gold worth Rs 23.17 lakh concealed in cardpaper at the international airport in Mumbai on Sunday.
The AIU officials intercepted Khaja Mohiddin on suspicion at the Customs area. He had arrived from Abu Dhabi.
The officials screened his bag and found 332 gm gold foils concealed in cardpaper sheet he was carrying in his shoulder bag. It prompted the officials to check his carton box, in which they found 596 gm gold foils in cardpaper sheets. They arrested Khaja in the case and subsequently released him on bail.
Officials said they keep a watch on suspected passengers and also take help of airport staff to identify gold smugglers. During the festive season, demand for unaccounted gold —smuggled goldincreases drastically.
