CAPE TOWN : Three cities in the Persian Gulf region may become uninhabitable the end of the century due to global warming.
This is according to new research published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
The study projects that by the end of the century the cities of Doha, the capital of Qatar, Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates and Bandar Abbas in Iran could lead to temperatures at which humans physically cannot survive.
It took into account both heat and humidity, and factors that prevent humans from exercising natural functions that allow the body to cool.
The constant heat is estimated to reach temperatures higher than 76°C, while the human body threshold should ideally remain below 35°C in order to maintain normal functionality.
Although these effects are only forecast for 2100, we are already seeing – and feeling – the effects of climate change.
Large parts of South Africa has been gripped by constant heat waves.
On Tuesday, 27 October, again, the South African Weather Service warned of extremely high fire danger conditions expected over the western interior of the Northern Cape, in the Klein Karoo and in western and central interior of the Western Cape.
