CALIFORNIA: SUVs and sport cars attract Californians. They have a great love for cars. Los Angeles auto show will attract them as Audi and BMW will confront each other later this month.
Audi will show its vision of a new-generation A8 flagship and fastest street-legal R8 with a 570-hp V-10 from Lamborghini. On the other hand BMW’s new X5 M and X6 M 5-door CUVs, which the German automaker refers to as an SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) and SAC (Sport Activity Coupe), respectively.
The new X-Series from BMW M offers more torque and power from their turbocharged 4.4L gasoline V-8s. BMW says power has been boosted 3% to 567 hp and torque, which can peak as low as 2,200 rpm, is hiked 10% to 553 lbs.-ft. (750 Nm). Despite the higher outputs, emissions have declined 20%.
All models come with self-leveling air suspension fitted at the rear. The M versions also get an edge with their exclusive multi plate clutch (integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission) that can vary torque distribution up to 100% between the front and rear axles.
Both models arrive in U.S. showrooms in the spring. The X5 M starts at $99,650 and the X6 M bases at $103,050, both including $950 destination and handling charges.
