KINGSTON: GROUP head of C&W Business John Maduri says telecommunications giant Cable and Wireless is willing to invest in another data centre in Jamaica if the planned logistics hub materialises.
Last Tuesday, Cable and Wireless Communications group (CWC) officially launched C&W Business as the entity responsible for business and government partner ICT solutions, from the combined strength of Columbus Business Solutions and CWC.
If constructed, the data centre will be used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems for the business of the logistics hub. Currently CWC provides data centre hosting, domestic and international managed network services and customised IT service solutions to local businesses and governments.
“Companies, banks and governments often are looking for different types of data centres based on their resilience and abilities to withstand challenges,” Maduri told the Jamaica Observer during the C&W Business launch expo at the Jamaica Conference Centre.
“One opportunity would be to invest in our existing facilities, but also there are indications that the Government is seeking partners to help them invest in data centres. Today we talked with Minister Hylton about the logistics hub, and as that evolves it could create the need for a new data centre. We’ve got a number of different doors and as the opportunity arises we are prepared to step up and invest in data centre capabilities in Jamaica,” he continued.
Maduri told the Business Observer that C&W Business intends to transform the workspace and telecoms landscape not only in Jamaica but across the region. The company currently operates a state-of-the-art subsea fibre-optic cable spanning more than 42,000 km – the most extensive in the region, as well as 38,000 km of terrestrial fibre providing wholesale and carrier backhaul capacity.
In September the company announced plans for the establishment of a call centre as part of a $7-billion investment it will be rolling out across the island next year. CWC hopes to return the El Salvador contact centre back to Jamaica and will be employing 400 individuals when the facility is open.
“We have two great companies — Cable and Wireless, which has over 140 years of history and a track record of being able to evolve and keep up with innovation, and then you have Columbus Communications that is known for innovation, and agility. So when we did our research on the brand, we found that customers believed strongly in Cable and Wireless, and showed great loyalty and affection for the brand,” Maduri stated in response to the question of keeping the name C&W in the refreshed C&W Business.
“There is a bit of a change, it’s C&W Business, not Cable and Wireless Business Solutions, so we have made slight modification. But what we want to do is capture the 140 years of staying relevant in the face of evolution and combining what we are doing in terms of agility and innovation.”
