PUNE: The city police have arrested four people for allegedly smuggling nearly 400 kg of meat, suspected to be beef.
Acting on a tip off, a team from Kondhwa police station intercepted a meat-laden vehicle at Ashirwad chowk in Kondhwa. “On inspection, we found meat, suspected to be beef, in the car. Four persons have been arrested in the case,” a police officer said.
Those arrested have been identified as Shoaib Ansari (21), Anirudh Gaikwad (20), Arbaz Qureshi (20), and Jabaz Qureshi (20) all residents of Hadapsar and Wanowrie.
Further, the police officer stated, “The meat and car have been seized. Samples of the meat have been sent to a veterinary hospital to conduct conclusive tests.”
Meanwhile, a case under section 5 (c) of Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act has been registered at Kondhwa police station.
Earlier in the year, Maharashtra government had banned cow slaughter and sale of beef in the state.
