TOKYO: Tokyo stocks fell Wednesday as investors ditched riskier assets following overnight declines in European and U.S. equity markets on concerns over the global economic outlook, offsetting a boost to domestic sentiment from stronger-than-expected Japanese machinery orders data.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 191.53 points, or 0.98 percent, from Tuesday at 19,301.07, a roughly one-month closing low. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 13.15 points, or 0.84 percent, lower at 1,555.58.
