PHNOM PENH: The country’s two largest ports – Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (SAP) and Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) – saw cargo throughput rise 17 percent and 7 percent respectively in the first 11 months of this year compared to the same period last year, official data showed.
SAP, the kingdom’s maritime container hub, handled 357,545 20-foot-equivalent units, or TEUs (standard-sized containers), from January to November this year, up 17 percent compared to the same period last year. Containerized cargo tonnage increased 9 percent to 3.4 million tons, the figures said.
Main products imported into Cambodia via the port were garment raw materials, vehicles, construction materials and petroleum, while major items exported from the Southeast Asian country were garment and footwear products, milled rice, and dry rubber.
“The growth reflects the increase in trade activity between Cambodia and friendly countries,” said So Sieng, director of SAP’s planning and statistics department. Meanwhile, PPAP, the country’s listed-freshwater port, reported that it received 132,819 TEUs during the first 11 months of this year, a 7-percent rise compared to the same period last year.
