DHAKA: Customs officials have arrested two Malaysians with six kilograms of gold at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Its Assistant Commissioner Shahiduzzaman Sarker said they have identified the duo as Chankok Wai, 24, and Chen Sim Sapp, 58.
He said the two arrived in Dhaka in a Malaysian Airlines flight which landed at 9:30pm on Wednesday.
Six gold bars, approximately worth Tk 30 million, were found on their waist belts during search, Sarker added.
He said the two Malaysian citizens had visited Bangladesh earlier. “But they didn’t get caught at the time.”
Legal measures against them were being taken, said the customs official.
Right after their arrests, Sarker had identified them as Chinese nationals.
Later, he told bdnews24.com: “They were drunk and talking incoherently. We first thought they were Chinese. But later we became certain that they were Malaysians.”
Earlier in the day, Customs Intelligence Department arrested four Biman Bangladesh Airlines passengers with 14.5 kg of gold at the same airport.
Its Director General Moinul Khan said they suspect that all the four are members of a gold smuggling cartel.
The estimated price of the gold bars was Tk 70 million, he added.
