India tea exports to Bangladesh up 600% during April-Oct FY16

DHAKA: Tea exports from India to Bangladesh rose sharply from 0.53 million kg during April to October 2014 to 3.87 million kg during April to October 2015, while the Netherlands bought less tea from India during April-October 2015, y-o-y.

In value terms, tea exports to Bangladesh were up by 519% at Rs 29.28 crore, from Rs 4.73 crore.

Overall tea exports from India during the period was 119.25 million kg valued at Rs 2,318.07 crore, up from 111.19 million kg worth Rs 2,224.54 crore during April to October last year, according to provisional statistics released by the Tea Board of India.

In value terms, exports were up by 4.2% while volume exports grew by 7.25%.

Tea production fell marginally by 6.62 million to 946.49 million kg during April to October this year, from 953.59 million kg during the corresponding period last year.

The fall was mainly due to a decline in production in south India, from 155.8 million kg to 148.58 million kg compensated to an extent by north India where production was up at 798.39 million kg, from 797.39 million kg during April to October last year.

Major tea buying countries from India include the Russian Federation, the UK, the UAE, Iran, Pakistan and Germany.
