MULTAN: The Customs Intelligence and Investigations (I&I) Multan region seized a truck loaded with prohibited chewing tobacco worth millions of rupees on Monday.
According to sources, the Additional Director Nisar Ahmad formed a team to raid in Dera Ghazi Khan after receiving information that illegal chewing tobacco laden-truck will enter Punjab through Sakhi Sarwar route.
The teams of Multan and D.G.Khan offices in a joint operation seized the truck. The driver was trying to pass the Sakhi Sarwar check post through a secret place of Koh-e-Suleman but the teams took timely action and seized truck.
It is learnt that the driver, contraband chewing tobacco and the vehicle will be handed over to the Multan office within few days where the officials will make a complete assessment and then announce the actual value of the contraband chewing tobacco. According to officials, apparently the value of the seized items is estimated in millions.
As per the guideline of health department, Gutka and Zafarani Patti are considered responsible for oral cancer and other severe negative health effects. As with paan and other smokeless tobacco products, there are preventive efforts to encourage users to quit these items.
