MEXICO CITY: Mexico expects its shipments of agricultural products to China to increase 100 percent next year as Chinese consumers’ appetite grows for imported food and more products are approved to enter China, a Mexican government official said yesterday in Shanghai.
Jose Calzada, secretary of agriculture, livestock, rural development, fisheries and food, said Mexico’s food exports to China are set to rise 25 percent annually this year. He added the growth rate will reach 100 percent next year as Mexico was recently allowed to export white corn to the China market.
“China has become a major consumer of agricultural products and we are very positive about the market,” said Calzada. “Companies and consumers here are interested in food from Mexico, and we hope to bring more products to the market.”
Mexico is negotiating with Chinese authorities on imports of blueberries, horse meat, and bananas to the domestic market, while China is seeking exports of shrimps and pomegranate to the Mexican market.
