CANBERRA: Barnaby Joyce, Australian Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, welcomed Indonesia’s recommendation to import 200,000 cattles from Australia in the first four months of 2016, with an indicative annual quota of 600,000 cattles for 2016.
“After our recent visit to Indonesia, there was a good reception on sustained quota and movement towards annual quota,” said Minister Joyce in a press release received by Tempo on Wednesday, January 6, 2016.
According to Joyce, the move is beneficial not only for consumers and food processors in Indonesia, but also for cattle breeders in Australia. “Our live cattle trade is a big contributor to the economy of both countries as well as livelihood and welfare of the people of Indonesia and Australia,” said Joyce.
Joyce continued that Australia’s agreement with Indonesia in live cattle export industry is getting stronger day by day. Nevertheless, Australia still respects Indonesia’s rights in deciding livestock imports.
The Australian government will continue to work with its Indonesian counterpart to ensure that live cattle trade meets the needs and policies of both countries. For that, Australia will continue to focus on the benefit of the annual quota system for both countries “Good intergovernmental relations between Indonesia and Australia have made this work easier,” said Joyce. Australia promised that they will continue to be a reliable exporter that produces high quality and safe products.
