ISLAMABAD: Advising farmers to opt for quality corn hybrid seeds to increase per acre yield, experts emphasized the need for encouraging private sector to introduce new seed varieties.
The experts pointed out that farmers had gradually shifted high-yielding seeds after the introduction of hybrid maize. They regretted that in Pakistan, most of the farmers failed to get the desired production due to use of substandard hybrid seeds and old farming techniques. They also stressed the need for adoption of best quality hybrids in the wake of changing weather patterns. It will help the farmers to cope with the harsh weather conditions, fit in changing crop rotations and most importantly provide much-needed economic benefits to the farmers.
The experts said since introduction of hybrid maize in 90s, hybrid maize had increased production from a mere 30 maunds/acre to 80-120 maunds/acre. They said corn crop could be highly lucrative for farmers as it had higher per acre yield than other crops.
