MINNEAPOLIS: U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Internatonal Airport seized cocaine and hashish oil from the luggage of two U.S. citizens returning from Cozumel, Mexico, on January 10. A 31-year-old male and 28-year-old female attempted to conceal nine grams of cocaine and 41 grams of hashish oil in their luggage. After discovery and seizure of the narcotics, CBP turned the passengers over to local law enforcement officials for prosecution.
Airlines increase the number of flights to tropical destinations in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean during winter months. Minneapolis Area Port Director Jennifer De La O praised the CBP officers for their vigilance during the busy winter travel season. “This seizure demonstrates our officers’ dedication to enforcing the CBP mission and keeping illegal drugs from entering the United States,” De La O said.
CBP conducts inspections at ports of entry across the county, and is responsible for enforcing an extensive list of regulations, including laws regarding trade, immigration, agriculture, public safety, and national security. On a typical day, CBP processes over a million passengers arriving from abroad and seizes over 10,000 pounds of drugs.
Travelers with plans to vacation abroad are encouraged to visit CBP’s Travel section to answer any questions regarding the inspection process and import regulations.
