Xiamen Customs seizes chips in VCD player

SHANGHAI: One set of rusted old VCD player was surprisingly used to conceal nearly 30,000 microelectronic chips.

A professional institute identified 28,860 e-chips seized by Xiamen Customs District as electronic components including Schottky diodes, chip inductors and field effect transistors, marking it the first seizure of illegal entry of e-chips by a passenger in Xiamen Customs.

On November 2, through X-ray scan, officers in Xiamen Customs found something like “tree ring” in the luggage carried by a passenger from Jinmen Island. When the luggage was opened, some clothes and one set of old VCD player were found inside. According to the passenger, the VCD player was intended to personal enjoyment of movies.

“Now it is very handy to use personal computers, why to choose outdated VCD players for movie show?” With such a question, the officers took further inspection into the old player. Finally, through cooling fin space in the machine, the officers found an article like roll film. When being unpacked, the roll film was found loaded with numerous black chips – totally 28,860 chips.
