LONDON: Between the months of January and November of last year, blueberry exports from La Libertad, Peru amounted to over US$ 76 million, representing a 236% increase as compared to 2014’s numbers.
La Libertad is without a doubt the largest exporting region withing the nation, claiming 90% of the berry’s exports. Far behind, the northwestern region of Peru is followed by Ancash (holding a 3% stake), Lima (2%), and Ica (1%). Nationwide, Peruvian shipments totaled US$ 8,921,547.
The United States is the leading market for Peru’s berry exports followed by the Netherlands; combined the two countries make up more than US$ 65 million. The United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Spain are key markets as well.
According to Agri-net, the Andean nation can expect the fruit’s trade to double this year, claiming exports may reach “more than USD200 million” in 2016. Earlier this month it was reported that Peru is the 8th largest fruit and vegetable producer in the world.
