Railways to manufacture 186 coaches in its factory

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railway will manufacture 186 out of 250 coaches in its own factory.

The PC-I has been finalised for procurement of 250 coaches and has been forwarded to Planning Commission for approval. A tender to procure 800 high capacity hopper wagons would soon be floated, out of which 595 wagons will be manufactured at Coaches Factory Islamabad, an official told APP.

He said that Pakistan Railways’ annual production capacity of CFI is 120 coaches and during last two years, it has produced, rehabilitated and repaired 225 passenger coaches in the factory, of which 132 during 2013-14 and 93 during 2014-15.

Similarly, during previous two years, the number of productivity was 24 coaches in year 2011-12 and 40 coaches in 2012-13, the official added. With regard to steps taken by the government to improve efficiency of Railway Carriage Factory, Islamabad, he said un-interrupted arrangement of funds is being made for timely completion of on-going projects.

He said Pakistan Railways has made a paradigm shift in policy of the procurement of rolling stock, discouraging import as Completely Built Units (CBU) to indigenous manufacturing and added in future bulk of rolling stock will be manufactured locally in Pakistan Railway’s own manufacturing works including CFI.
