ATHENS: Two British men are being held in Greece on suspicion of carrying guns and ammunition across the border to Turkey.

The Iraqi-born men were arrested on Saturday night in the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis.

They are thought to have been planning to join Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State.

Dozens of firearms, tens of thousands of bullets and telescopic sights were stowed in a caravan.

It is thought the weapons were intended for training rather than combat.

There is some confusion over details about the men, with the Greek coastguard saying they are aged 35 and 36, the Press Association saying they are in their 20s and Reuters news agency saying they are 22 and 28.

The AFP news agency reported that a third older man, also with a British passport, was arrested at the Kipi border post on the Evros River, near the Greek-Turkish border.

The Greek coastguard says the men had been monitored for days before they were arrested but said there was no evidence to connect them to Islamic State and they were not on any terrorist or criminal database.

The men are due to appear before magistrates over the next few days on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons and smuggling.

The Foreign Office said it was “urgently” investigating the reports.
