AMSTERDAM: Statistics Netherlands expects that Amsterdam will collect 46.4 million euros in tourist tax over 2016, a 25 percent increase compared to last year. For all municipalities in the Netherlands proceeds from tourist tax are expected to increase by 8.6 percent to 188.6 million euros.
With the expected 46.4 million euros in tourist tax, Amsterdam accounts for a quarter of the tourist tax collected in the Netherlands. Last year the Dutch capital developed a policy to improve the collection of tourist tax on online and private accommodation rentals through sites like Airbnb. According to Statistics Netherlands, tax collected through this policy was not included in the initial budget for 2015, but is in 2016’s budget. Tourist tax accounts for 8 percent of Amsterdam’s municipal taxes.
Tourist taxes collected in the other three cities are substantially lower than in Amsterdam. In 2016 The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht are expected to collect 6.2 million, 3.6 million and 1.6 million euros respectively. Tourist tax also accounts for a lower share of the municipal taxes in these cities.
