KUALA LUMPUR: Police have busted the largest drug distribution and smuggling syndicate in the country so far this year with the seizure of 1.2 tonnes of ganja worth RM4.2 million at two locations, in Selangor and Kedah.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said a 38-year-old man was arrested in the raid in Selangor last Saturday.
“The raid was conducted at 3pm by the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) which stopped the suspect’s car in Subang Jaya and found 160 slabs of ganja in it.
“Police also found 200 more slabs of ganja kept in a house in Subang Jaya after the suspect brought them there,” he told reporters in Bukit Aman here yesterday.
Based on information from the suspect, police recovered 843 slabs of ganja in a house in Sungai Petani, Kedah, he said.
“We carried out the second raid at 1.40am on Sunday, soon after getting the information about the house used as a store,” he said.
Mohd Mokhtar said the drug was believed to have been brought into the country by sea from Thailand for supply in the local market for a year.
“According to police records, throughout last year, 1,290kg of ganja were seized and this year, as of March 15, we confiscated 1,477kg of ganja. This is the biggest ganja seizure (so far this year),” he said.
He said the suspect had been remanded for seven days until Sunday and the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
