Customs Court remands alleged currency smuggler

LAHORE: The Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has sent an alleged currency smuggler to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

The suspect, Tahir Bharwana, was intercepted by Customs authorities at Lahore airport when he was going to Bahrain through a private airline. The officials checked his luggage and recovered $7,135 and 16,000 Bahraini Dinars. The total worth of the recovered currency is estimated at Rs 5.2 million.

The customs officials arrested him for violating the Pakistan Customs laws and registered a case against him under Section 2 (s), 16, 139, 156, (17), 87 (70), and 178 of Customs Act, 1969. A FIR number 4/16 has also been lodged at Lahore Customs Investigation and Prosecution.

Earlier, the court had remanded the accused into the custody of Customs Court on physical remand.
