FAISALABAD: Showing exceptional performance, the Faisalabad Customs under the supervision of then Collector Tausif Ahmad Qureshi (currently working as director of IOCO), intercepted four containers – three imported by M/s Elite Enterprises and one by M/s Shahzad Enterprises, after finding the loaded items different to declared ones.

All three containers were imported from UAE.

Sources informed Customs Today that Collector Tausif Qureshi directed a thorough investigation into the matter, including preparation of a complete examination report of the goods found inside the container (quantity, condition, packing etc) with photographs; comparison and verification of addresses of the importers in the tax record with the declaration filed on TPs/GDs and supporting documents, as well as the source of funds and documentary evidence of transaction of money in respect of the goods will also be investigated.

Sources said that the modus operandi of the importers was to manipulate nuts and bolts of the doors of the containers in a meticulous way while keeping the seals intact.

In this way, high value and tariff items were replaced with low value items. So the officials found that LEDs/LCDs were replaced with ceramic tiles, obsolete suitcases and other ordinary items. In this regard, Customs Faisalabad has obtained original documents which have proved the replacement of goods. In these cases, criminal proceedings are underway whereas the offenders are absconding. The collectorate is making hectic efforts to apprehend the culprits.

It may mention here that the cases of above mentioned are under hearing before the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication.
