Country has sufficient sugar for months: Inter-ministerial body

ISLAMABAD: The Inter-Ministerial Committee, in its third monthly meeting, has shown satisfaction over 3.55 million metric tons sugar stock to fulfil demand in the country for the upcoming months including Ramazan.

The meeting, held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan, reviewed the position of sugar exports, available stocks and price trend in domestic market.

The national average retail price of sugar, as reported in the Sensitive Price Index, was Rs62.51 during the week ending on 17th March, the meeting was informed.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet in December 2015 had allowed export of 500,000 tonnes of sugar with a subsidy of Rs13,000 per ton. The country has so far exported 198,387 MT of sugar since the ECC granted permission to export sugar.
