CASA-1000, TAPI: Pakistan, US to work together on energy projects

WASHINGTON: Pakistan and the United States have announced to work together on Energy Cooperation Strategy, which sets priorities for the Clean Energy Partnership through 2020.

This was decided at a meeting of the Pakistan-US Energy Working Group which met in Washington. The US officials appreciated the Pakistan economic reform agenda especially in the energy sector. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen their multifaceted partnership that reflects a shared interest in increased economic ties and Pakistan’s stability and growth. The two sides agreed to work closely on CASA-1000 and TAPI gas pipeline projects.

Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs Amos Hochstein welcomed Minister of Water and Power Khwaja Muhammad Asif and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for the US-Pakistan Energy Working Group under the US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue.

The officials discussed bilateral energy cooperation, including a strategy to implement the US-Pakistan Clean Energy Partnership and other initiatives. As an outcome of Prime Minister Sharif’s meeting with President Obama in October 2015, the United States and Pakistan reached agreement on a strategic document to guide clean energy collaboration through 2020.

A core objective of the US-Pakistan Clean Energy Partnership is to facilitate private sector investment that will help add at least 3,000 megawatts of clean power to Pakistan’s electricity supply.
