In the wider 28-nation EU, the unemployment rate was 8.9 percent in February, the lowest since May 2009.

The figures reflect the number of persons unemployed in February decreased by 59,000 in the EU and by 39,000 in the euro area compared with the precious month.

Analysts said more people coming to work will help underpin growing domestic demand and support the modest economic recovery.

Among the member states, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Germany at 4.3 percent, the Czech Republic at 4.5 percent and Britain at 5 percent.

The highest unemployment rates were observed in Greece at 24.0 percent and Spain 20.4 percent.
